Main Task

For our main task we were going to do the opening for an action film but decide it would be too difficult and unfeasible so we therefore changed our idea to a thriller.
The budget will be very low and our filming will be taking place at Queens Park and the dark room at our school.
Our film is going to be about a girl whose sister is kidnapped and when the kidnapper contacts her she is given thirteen hours to complete thirteen tasks so that she can win back her sister.
The thirteen tasks will include arriving to destinations on time, collecting illegal substances and weapons, to killing enemies of the kidnapper. At the end of the film the thirteenth challenge will be to find her sister in one of the countless body bags that fill a warehouse before a bomb goes off in three minutes from entering the warehouse. The code that will disarm the bomb is with her sister who is unconscious in one body bags. The heroine finds her sister and disarms the bomb, however the kidnapper is not found.
Our two minutes opening sequence will include the phone conversation between the kidnapper and heroine, we will add a shot of the girl who has been kidnapped and we will include the 'first task'. This will be of the girl having find a stranger in the park who has a note from the kidnapper which will have the second task. When the girl looks up at the stranger he is gone. The title sequence will then be shown at the end of our filming.
The music we use will be low in pitch and change pace, it will also be very dramatic. This will help us to create atmosphere.
The lighting will be a mix o natural lighting and dim lighting.
When we put together our footage in the editing process we will be using quick snappy scenes cut together that cut from the two characters having a phone converstaion. We will add the title sequence while we edit. The camera shots we will be using will be close ups, extreme close ups, match on action and shot reverse shot.
Lauanne will play the girl who gets kidnapped. John will be the kidnapper. I, Zoe, will be the heroine. James will be the stranger who gives my character the note.
The title of our film will be 'The 13th Hour'.
Other films that are related to our task are 'Gone in 60 Seconds' and 'Taken'.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

The thing I thought that was done well when making my preliminary task were, the time management. By this I mean the time it took me to us to film and then to edit the footage.
I also think we got along very well as a group and were able to work together very efficiently.
The things that I think needs to be improved on and do differently in the main task were doing more when editing, such as scene transactions and adding a title and names. I also think that we could improve on using the camera. By this I mean that we could use a tripod to steady the camera, take more shots so that we have more footage to use and to find a place slightly quieter to film or to dull background sounds when we edit.

Media:3rd Febuary

For our preliminary task one member of our group wasn't in so there were only three of us, however we worked around this minor glitch and changed a few things around. Our sequence started with Lauanne and I sitting on a bench outside and talking while John filmed, after this I was meant to have a small conversation between James and I but as James wasn't in Lauanne simply filmed me talking to myself and we changed the line I was meant to say. John then came out and I took over control of the camera and filmed Lauanne and John sitting on a bench and having a conversation. After this I filmed John opening a door which lead to the benches and I filmed John crossing the playing ground where we did our filming. We then went on to edit our footage.

Analysis of the opening sequences of two different genres

Fantasy: Peter Pan

The opening two minutes of 'Peter Pan' starts with low non-diegetic sound which builds up and becomes louder. A tinkling sound is then layered on top of the music to give it a very fairytale like feeling. The title of the film then appears which is very bold and eye catching because the first 'P' is bold and made to look like both a sword and the cover of the book, which again gives off a very fairytale like feel. All of this is a huge indication to the fantasy/fairytale adventure genre.
We are then introduced to the character Wendy who is in her room with her brothers acting out a story which involves Captain Hook, which is a form of dramatic irony because the audience all know that Hook is real but Wendy and her brothers don't yet know this. During her story telling the camera looks up at Wendy putting her into a position of power, this is part of mise-en-scene and tells the audience that she is one of the most important characters in the film. Next the audience is introduced to the hero, Peter Pan who's looking in through the window, during our first glimpse of Peter a voice over starts and talks through what's going on and who he is. Once more this is very fairytale like.
In this opening two minutes we get a very strong feel of adventure through the music and the voice over and the title that is seen makes it clear to the audience that this will be a fairytale.

Thriller: Panic Room

The opening two minutes of 'Panic Room' starts with the sound of police sirens and a view of a skyline with tall buildings, so automatically the audience knows the film is set in a city. The camera then changes to different views of buildings and sky scrapers, because the camera is showing shots that are far from the ground the audience feels isolated, this feeling of isolation is then reinforced and intensified by non-diegetic. The music that's being used is very low in pitch and due to this it sounds very menacing and intimidating. The names of the production company, distributor, actors and the film title appear in bold lettering around the tops of the building, the boldness of the lettering once again gives off a intimidating feel because of its size and the fact that it draws the attention of the audience by appearing in the middle of the screen when there isn't anything else to look at except for the tops of buildings, which all look the same.
The music then gets faster and a ticking sound is placed on top of it which is used to create a tense, rushed and panicked atmosphere, however the sound of traffic and cars is heard from below and this give the audience a sense of familiarity which is in contrast with the music. The shot continues to change from different buildings but there is a shot looking down on the street and the cars and people below which separates the audience from everyone else, making them feel secluded. This builds on the isolation the audience is already feeling.
More non-diegetic sound is layered on top of the audience. There is a contrast between the slow, low pitch and the fast, high pitch building on the panicked, confused atmosphere.
We then see a drastic change as the scene changes from buildings with an industrial feel to a park which gives of a very calm and suburban feel. The green of the park is very calming which is part of mise-en-scene, however this coupled with the sound makes the audience on edge as they feel as though the peace will only be short lived and will soon be disturbed.
We her the voice of a woman's before we see her. When we do see her she is among the crowd on the street, this takes the audience from feeling secluded to feeling claustrophobic due to the number of people there are in the shot. By doing this the camera goes from one extreme to another.
Through out the opening two minutes of this film the music is the only indication the audience gets of the genre and this feels very eerie all on its own because the characters appear not to know what's in store and the audience are completely blind to the on coming danger.#

Preliminary Task

Here is my finished preliminary task. To complete the task I had to edit it on Adobe Premiere Pro, which was quite difficult at firts because I was new to the soft wear. When I was editing I had to delete any useless filming that was done and cut out some bits of filming in the shots we used. I then had to put the different clips in the order they were to be shown in and then I had to upload the completed piece to You Tube where I could then upload it to this blog.
The things that I cut were small bits at the end of the scenes of people smiling when they shouldn't be or at the beginning of the scenes when we were filming but weren't completely ready.
